The Tale of “Kitty”

In the grand halls of Everleigh Manor, young Lillian Beaumont sat on the cold marble steps, the weight of her book balanced delicately on her lap. But her attention was divided, for nestled beside her, purring softly, was Kitty, a sleek, black kitten with eyes like polished amber. Kitty’s tail curled around Lillian’s arm, as if binding them in an unspoken understanding, a silent promise of companionship.

Outside, the gaslights flickered along the foggy streets of London and the distant sound of carriage wheels echoed against the cobblestones. But within the safety of Everleigh’s lavish walls, the world felt quiet, almost frozen in time. The grand staircase, adorned with intricate wrought-iron railings, had become their favourite retreat, Lillian’s place of solace and Kitty’s chosen throne.

Kitty was more than a pet; she was a confidante. She had arrived one stormy evening, no more than a tiny ball of fur, shivering at the doorstep of Everleigh Manor. Lillian had scooped her up without hesitation, defying her governess’ protests that a young lady of her station should not keep such creatures indoors. But Lillian had always been different, unbothered by the rigid expectations of Victorian society.

As the night deepened, Lillian read aloud, her voice barely louder than a whisper. Kitty blinked slowly, as if absorbing every word, as if she too understood the longing in the heroine’s heart, the desire for a life beyond gilded cages and well-mannered curtsies. Perhaps, in their own way, they were both strays; Lillian, a girl seeking adventure in a world that wished to tame her, and Kitty, a creature who had found love in the most unexpected of places.

With a soft sigh, Lillian closed the book and ran her fingers gently through Kitty’s fur. “One day, we’ll have adventures of our own,” she murmured. Kitty responded with a slow, knowing blink, as if she had always believed it to be true.
