Will AI Steal My Job?
It’s a question I hear more often these days: “Aren’t you worried AI will take over your work?” As someone who designs websites and creates graphics, I totally get why people ask. AI is everywhere, from writing articles to designing logos, even building websites in minutes. So it’s natural to wonder if the human touch is still needed.
But let me be honest with you: I’m not losing sleep over it.
AI is impressive. I’ve seen it generate clever headlines, whip up colour palettes and even suggest layouts for websites. They’re great for getting ideas flowing, drafting rough outlines or automating small tasks like resizing images or analysing SEO data. But here’s the key: AI is a tool. Not a creator.
When I take on a project – whether it’s designing a visual identity for a brand, writing copy for a website or developing site – I’m not just following a formula. I’m learning about the client. What they stand for. Who their audience is. What their goals are. It’s personal, strategic and tailored.
AI can’t do that!
It doesn’t sit down with a client and listen to their story. It doesn’t ask the right questions or catch the subtle emotions behind someone’s vision. It doesn’t know that a certain colour palette makes a business owner feel empowered or that a specific tone of voice resonates more deeply with a niche audience. That kind of insight comes from real conversation, empathy and experience.
Recently, one of my clients asked me to redesign their website. They’d been using a DIY template that looked okay, but it wasn’t converting. After a bit of digging, it was clear that their messaging was too vague and the layout didn’t lead users anywhere meaningful. I rebuilt their website, rewrote their copy and restructured everything based on what their customers actually needed and the results spoke for themselves. That process? No AI could have done it. Not because the tools don’t exist, but because the thinking behind it was uniquely human.
I think the fear that AI will “steal jobs” comes from this idea that creativity and strategy can be automated. But really, they can’t! What we do as designers and writers isn’t just about making things look nice or sound polished. It’s about creating connections, solving problems, understanding context and being flexible when things shift.
AI works best with clear instructions. It thrives in black-and-white scenarios. But real life? Real clients? Real businesses? They live in the grey. They change their minds. They grow. They evolve. And that’s where we, as designers, shine. In the ability to adapt, interpret and bring a human touch to everything we create.
So, will AI steal my job?
No. But it will challenge me to evolve and that’s a good thing. It’s already pushed me to be more efficient, to think more critically about what I offer and to focus on what truly sets me apart. It’s not just about being creative. It’s about being irreplaceably creative.
At the end of the day, clients aren’t looking for a robot. They’re looking for someone who “gets” them. Someone who can take their vision and turn it into something beautiful, functional and effective. And that’s where I come in!
Let AI handle the repetitive stuff. I’ll stick to creating the kind of work that actually makes people feel something.
